From Concept to Publication – 'Shadow & Silk' featured in Bold & Beyond Magazine

    Bold & Beyond Magazine · Portrait Issue No. 940 · June 2026

Some projects begin quietly. Shadow & Silk was one of them.

There was no brief, no client, no publication in mind. Only an idea I had been carrying with me for a long time — a portrait in the spirit of Marlene Dietrich. Reduced. Timeless. Photographed in the visual language of an era in which a single glance could tell an entire story.

A few months later this quiet idea became the cover of Bold & Beyond Magazine, Portrait Issue No. 940, together with a six-page editorial and a personal interview.

This journal entry documents both — the finished publication and the story behind it.

    The idea behind the series

Shadow & Silk was created as a very personal fine art series. The starting point was a simple thought: what would a portrait in the spirit of Marlene Dietrich look like today — not as a costume, but as an atmosphere?

The result is a series of quiet, low-key black and white portraits. Deep shadows. Silk. Tuxedo. A single, controlled light source. Everything was reduced until only what really mattered remained: expression, posture, presence.

Model Jennifer carried this idea from the first frame. Makeup artist Asquina Attems gave the look its final, understated precision.

    Why Bold & Beyond

Bold & Beyond Magazine is an international editorial platform that focuses on strong photographic voices — portrait, fashion and fine art. The Portrait Issue No. 940 dedicates a full feature to Shadow & Silk, including cover, editorial spread and a personal interview about my path into photography as a second career.

For me, the publication represents more than a printed page. It shows that a quiet, personal idea can hold its own in an international editorial context — precisely because it is quiet.
